A week long programme of events aimed at self builders across the UK could help turn dream homes into a reality.
The first ever National Self Builder’s Week has been organised to help prospective home builders achieve their ambitions, with practical advice on the numerous construction options available, and information on innovative approaches to self build by local authorities and specialist developers.
Organised by the National Self Build Association (NaSBA) and Grand Designs Live, the event launch coincides with the results of a nationwide survey that identifies at least six million people currently planning or researching a self build. Of these, the report suggests at least one million are now at the ‘action’ stage of plot finding, applying for planning permission, or about to start construction.
However, despite the high level of interest, the number of people actually building their own home in the UK was around 12,000 last year – a fraction of those in mainland Europe which constitute over 50% of all new builds annually.
The NaSBA believes the disparity between the ‘desire’ to build and actual output highlights the need for National Self Builder’s Week, and hopes the initiative will better inform would be builders on all aspects of creating a custom home.
Ted Stevens, Chair of NaSBA said: “All around the UK there are examples of really innovative self build projects happening – from cohousing schemes, to developer led self build projects; from ultra low cost eco homes to design led initiatives to regenerate run down areas. At present less than 10 per cent of all the new homes in the UK are self builds...we want to see the proportion grow, and we are sure the Week will help thousands, if not millions of people to get their projects underway.”
The event, supported by the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG), will take place from 4-12 May as part of Grand Designs Live at the Excel, London. Self build industry champion and Grand Designs presenter Kevin McCloud will be among the guest speakers, which also include celebrity architect George Clarke and Housing Minister Mark Prisk MP.
