Aspiring designers are being invited to create cost conscious house plans as part of a nationwide competition.
The ‘Self Build on a Shoestring’ competition, launched this week by Grand Designs Live, in conjunction with the National Self Build Association, asks participants to design a two bedroomed ‘self build friendly’ home that can be constructed for less than £50,000.
While the budget constraints may seem tight, competition organisers cite Dominic Stevens’ £20,000 compact house in Ireland as an example of how much can be achieved with limited funds and abundant imagination.
Entrants must display pioneering ideas and new concepts in their designs, to show that low cost housing can be both beautiful and sustainable. Winning entries will share part of the overall £5,000 prize fund.
The competition deadline is September 20th, 2013 and winners will be revealed at the Grand Designs Live exhibition at the Birmingham NEC, from the 4 – 6th October 2013.
